CHANDIGARH: With two deadly terror attacks in last two years preceded by Pakistan fidayeen waylaying cars, the ministry of home affairs (MHA) has issued an alert to Punjab, asking the state cops to keep a sharp lookout for car snatching in the state.
According to the MHA alert, 12 Punjab car snatchings are under scrutiny. A communication regarding this was sent to Punjab Police in May.
The alert has said that terrorists and gangsters may use these snatched vehicles for crime during upcoming events like the 33rd Operation Bluestar anniversary.
According to the alert, three vehicles were snatched from border districts in Punjab and others from Moga, Ludhiana, Ferozepur, Bhikhi (Mansa), Tanda (Hoshiarpur) and Jagraon.
The alert does not make any reference to recent video threats issued to Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh following a controversy over Canadian defence minister Harjit Singh Sajjan’s visit to Punjab. Amarinder had refused to meet Sajjan while dubbing him and his cabinet colleagues pro-Khalistanis.
According to the alert, most of the snatched vehicles are white-coloured hatchbacks – six Maruti Swift Dzires and Hyundai i20s. Punjab Police have put up a 24-hour nakas at several places till the Bluestar anniversary on June 6. According to a senior cop, a district police chiefs have also been asked to scrutinze suspicious arms licences and daily sale of weapons.
