12 car snatching on its radar, MHA asks Punjab to be alert

According to the MHA alert, 12 Punjab car snatchings are under scrutiny. A communication regarding this was sent to Punjab Police in May.

Operation BluestarThe alert has said that terrorists and gangsters may use these snatched vehicles for crime during upcoming events like the 33rd Operation Bluestar anniversary.

According to the alert, three vehicles were snatched from border districts in Punjab and others from Moga, Ludhiana, Ferozepur, Bhikhi (Mansa), Tanda (Hoshiarpur) and Jagraon.

The alert does not make any reference to recent video threats issued to Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh following a controversy over Canadian defence minister Harjit Singh Sajjan’s visit to Punjab. Amarinder had refused to meet Sajjan while dubbing him and his cabinet colleagues pro-Khalistanis.

 

According to the alert, most of the snatched vehicles are white-coloured hatchbacks – six Maruti Swift Dzires and Hyundai i20s. Punjab Police have put up a 24-hour nakas at several places till the Bluestar anniversary on June 6. According to a senior cop, a district police chiefs have also been asked to scrutinze suspicious arms licences and daily sale of weapons.

“Following the alert, a technical workshop of licensing authorities and district police chiefs on provisions of Arms Act, 1959, and Arms Rules 2016 was conducted with the aim of checking arms smuggling .”  TOI had on April 16 reported that the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Chandigarh had found that only one .32 bore revolver was used in three out of four killings of Hindu leaders that rocked Punjab during 2016 and 2017.
