Chandigarh, May 2: An avid reader of Indian mythology, Pranav Goyal has topped in Chandigarh tricity, securing All-India Rank (AIR) 4 in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2018, the results of which were declared on Monday.

Over 14,000 candidates had taken the exam from the tricity. The city has two more students among the top 100.

The JEE Main rank makes the candidates eligible for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes in National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other centrally funded technical institutions. The JEE Main, conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), is also an eligibility test for the JEE Advanced, for admission to undergraduate programmes offered by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Pranav, a student of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Panchkula, and son of a city-based businessman, scored 350 out of 360 marks in the exam.

“I used to study five hours every day. I devoted the entire year in studying for the JEE Advanced. In the last one month, I studied the additional topics for JEE Main and went through previous years’ question papers,” said Pranav.

Meanwhile, Vishav Rakesh Vij of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Collegiate Public School, Sector 26, has secured AIR 45 with 329 marks.

Son of industrialist parents, Vishav aims to get admission in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US, after pursuing computer science engineering from IIT Bombay.

“It does not matter how many hours you study. The concentration level matters,” he said.

Son of bureaucrats, Kartikeya Rai of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, has secured AIR 90 with 318 marks. His father, Rajnish Rai, is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer posted in Telangana and mother, Vatsala Vasudeva, is an Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer posted in Gujarat. His mother was on child care leave for the past two years to help him with the preparations.

“I am in love with science. That is my sole motivation. I want to pursue research work in either maths or physics,” said Kartikeya.

In 2017, there were four candidates from the tricity who had made it to the top 100 in JEE Main. Meanwhile, once again there is no girl from the tricity among the top 100.

The JEE Advanced, conducted by the IITs, is to be held on May 20.
