New Delhi, June 1: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha Prem Singh Chandumajra on Thursday said the Congress government in Punjab was trying to mislead people through its decision to drop Section 67-A from the Cooperative Societies Act so as to end ‘Kurki’ (land attachment) of farmers who default on return of bank loans.

chandumajraHe said this Section was put in cold storage in 1986 when he was cooperative minister in the state in 1986.

“This Section had never been invoked against any farmer in the state since then,” he said.

He said by dropping the Section, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh is giving an impression that the government was cognisant only with regard to Cooperative loans of farmers.

Amarinder had made a poll promise to waive off all loans of farmers, including ones relating to commercial banks and those procured from money lenders. He said either Amarinder was administratively inept or was being misled by his bureucracy on which he is mysteriously overdependent.

“But the dominant impression is that the chief minister is trying to pull wool on the eyes of the people with regard to the promise of loan waiver to farmers,” Chandumajra said.
