Faridkot, June 11: The Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) will start the first round of counselling today to shift 1,400 students of Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital, Banur, even as the college has challenged a High Court’s decision of shift them.
The HC had, on June 2, directed the state government to complete the process of shifting the students within three weeks. The college, however, filed a petition in the Supreme Court on June 8, challenging the HC order.
Apprehensive of such a move, some students of Gian Sagar college had already filed a caveat application in the Supreme Court on June 7.
Caveat is lodged to get the right to appear before court on the hearing of an application which is expected to be made in a case.
Dr Raj Bahadur, Vice-Chancellor, BFUHS, said the counselling would be conducted as per schedule. “Until there is any order to the contrary, the university will go ahead with the June 2 order of the High Court,” he said.
The fate of 1,437 students, including 500 of the MBBS, 500 of the BDS and 224 of BSc (nursing), will be decided in the counselling.
Sources said the Gian Sagar management decided to challenge shifting and withdrawal of its essentiality and no-objection certificate after a private hospital in Delhi proposed to take over the college.
