Fatehgarh Sahib, March 5: A debt-ridden farmer, Sukhwinder Singh (42), of Makaronpur village allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Bhakra canal. According to the family, he was depressed as he was under a debt of Rs20 lakh taken from bank, commission agents and a cooperative society.
He got married four years ago and had a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter.Kesar Singh, uncle of the deceased, said Sukhwinder had taken a loan of Rs15 lakh from Axis Bank, Rs2 lakh from a cooperative society and Rs2 lakh from commission agents.
He had taken loan to start dairy farming. He used to supply milk, but purchasers were not paying him. So, he was unable to pay the instalments. He had five acres and had sold half an acre to clear instalments, but to no avail.
The uncle said he often remained tense. On February 24, he left the house in his car and did not return. The family started looking for him and informed the police. The next day, they received a message his car was lying abandoned at Bhakra canal bridge near Khalspur village. His body was recovered from the canal yesterday.
