Denied social welfare benefits, widows demand investigation

Abohar, April 7: A visually impaired man and some widows, including one who survived an attack by militants in 1990, have complained that their Blue Cards and pension letters were “illegally” cancelled during verification ordered by the Congress government to check anomalies in the previous SAD-BJP government.

Samaj Sudhar Sabha president Rajesh Gupta, who had been battling for the rights of such residents here, on Friday led a deputation to Sub-Divisional Magistrate Poonam Singh and submitted a memorandum.

The members in the deputation shared their grievances with the SDM. The NGO demanded an inquiry into the complaints.

Later speaking to the media, the victims recalled that Congress leaders had promised to unravel the scams that had taken place during the decade-long SAD-BJP “misrule”. The party had also promised an inquiry into the issuance of Blue Cards.

Gupta said that Food and Supplies Department and Social Security officials last year organised camps and told eligible people to re-submit their papers to claim benefits under the Food Security Act and social welfare schemes. But the verification was done in an arbitrary fashion, Gupta alleged.
