DGP Arora recuses himself from panel

Chandigarh, April 11: State DGP Suresh Arora has recused himself from the three-member panel set up by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to look into the recent dissension in the police top brass, following which he has been replaced with Chief Secretary Karan Avtar Singh.

The other members of the panel are Chief Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar and Home Secretary NS Kalsi.

The DGP, in a communication to the Chief Minister, said he did not wish to be a member of the panel examining the matter arising out of a senior officer’s complaint against him.
His request was accepted. Sources said Arora had argued that it was not proper for him to head a panel when a colleague had doubted his credentials.
The panel has been asked to submit a detailed report after DGP (HRD) Siddharth Chattopadhyaya targeted Arora and DGP (Intelligence) Dinkar Gupta in a drug case in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The Chief Minister has called an urgent meeting of DGP and ADGP-rank officers on Wednesday on the issue of indiscipline.
Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Tuesday expressed concern over the ongoing controversy between top police officials of the state.
In a press release, Dr Joginder Dayal, national executive member of the CPI, said the allegations levelled against DGP Suresh Arora and DGP (intelligence) Dinkar Gupta by DGP (Human Resource Development) S Chattopadhyaya was a serious matter.

He said the Chief Minister should ask both senior officials to step down and order a CBI probe into the case. He alleged that the way Chief Minister had tried to push the entire issue under the carpet showed that he was callous when it comes to dealing with drug mafia.
