Eight arrested for duping people outside banks

Chandigarh, December 24: The UT police have arrested eight members of an interstate gang of fraudsters, who used to dupe gullible people outside banks by exchanging their money and in return gave them wads of paper wrapped in a handkerchief.

With their arrest, the police claimed to have solved four such cases reported in the city this year.

A team led by Inspector Jaspal Singh, SHO, Sector 17 police station, nabbed the suspects, who have been identified as Mukesh Kumar Mahato (30), Shatrudhan Mahto (25), Kavinder (19) and Upender Kumar (19), all staying at Dadu Majra Colony (DMC), and Kapil Dev (28), Kawal Sahni (25), Sudesh Mahto (25) and Sanjeev Kumar (21), who were staying at Kambali village in SAS Nagar district.

Police officials said the suspects were natives of Pipra Kothi village in Motihari, Bihar.

The police said apart from the tricity, the gang had also duped people in Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Delhi.

After duping people, the suspect used to send money to their families.

Modus operandi

The gang members used to stand outside banks and look for easy prey. Those who were uneducated used to be their priority. The suspects used to narrate a story to the victim that they have money, which was stolen from somewhere and they are ready to exchange it even for a lesser amount so that they are not caught. The victims used to get lured by huge returns they were offered. The suspect used to show their victims a bundle of currency notes. However, while exchanging it, they used to hand them a bundle of paper wrapped in a handkerchief.
