New Delhi, August 22: Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Gurudas Kamat died at a private hospital in New Delhi on Wednesday. He was 63.

Kamat, who was previously in charge of Gujarat and Rajasthan in the party, had fallen out with the top leadership of late and requested to be rested from party posts.

He was subsequently relieved of his positions by former Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

A former national president of Indian Youth Congress and an ex-MP, Kamat had a major factional war going on with Mumbai Congress Chief Sanjay Nirupam and had repeatedly flagged his concerns to the party leadership. Nirupam enjoys the confidence of Congress chief Rahul Gandhi.

Importantly, Kamat visited AICC on Tuesday after several months raising speculation of his possible return in some position.

Earlier on Wednesday he complained of complications and was shifted to Primus hospital in Chanakyapuri, where he passed away from likely cardiac complications.

Kamat was a patient of diabetes and his last tweet wishing Eid was posted seven hours ago.

Congress media head Randeep Surjewala condoled the death saying “Shocked and deeply anguished to learn about the sudden demise of Senior Congress Leader Sh Gurudas Kamat ji. No words are enough to describe the sense of loss.
