Facing unabated violence, Mehbooba calls all-party meeting today

Jammu, May 8: Amid unabated violence in Kashmir, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has convened an all-party meeting here on Wednesday to discuss the situation in the state. Sixteen persons have been killed in the the Kashmir Valley in the past four days.

On Saturday, three militants were killed in Srinagar’s Chattabal area and a teenager was run over by a police vehicle. On Sunday, five militants and five civilians were killed in a gunfight in Shopian. A tourist from Chennai was killed during stone-pelting in Baramulla on Monday.

A teenager, injured during the Bandipora gunfight, died on Tuesday morning.

Deputy CM Kavinder Gupta told The Tribune that a four-member BJP delegation would attend the meeting to “put across the party’s viewpoint”.

Pradesh Congress Committee chief Ghulam Ahmed Mir said he would try to “evolve a consensus” after consultations with his party colleagues. He claimed the state had plunged into anarchy. Panthers Party chief BS Mankotia said they would send a three-member delegation to the meeting. He blamed the amnesty announced for stone-pelters for the situation turning from bad to worse.
