Suicide: Farmers protest, want accused arrested

Bathinda, June 26: Activists of the BKU Ekta Ugrahan laid siege to Rampura police station for the second time on Monday, seeking the arrest of the third accused in a case of abetment of suicide.

The farmer, Gursewak Singh, had committed suicide at Lehra Dhurkot village on June 3. In his note, he had named Amarjeet Sharma of Bhagta Bhaika, Darshan Singh of Mandi Kalan and Rishu of Rampura Phul responsible for his death. A case was registered against the trio. Darshan Singh and Rishu were arrested.

Even 22 days after the incident, the body is still lying at the mortuary of Rampura Phul civil hospital.

Shingara Singh Mann, district president of the union, said: “We will continue our protest till the third accused in the case, Amarjit Sharma, is not arrested.”

He said the police had sought more time to arrest the accused, but they refused since he was trying to get bail from the High Court.

Bathinda SSP Naveen Singla said: “We are trying to arrest the accused, but the farmers have gheraoed the police station. The officers are trying to pacify them. We have assured the protesters that the accused would be arrested soon.”
