Chandigarh Jul 18: The next time you are caught littering in public places, be ready to shell out Rs 5,000 in residential areas and Rs 10,000 in commercial establishments. Amending the 1999 by laws, the UT administration on Monday notified the Municipal Corporation (Sanitation and Public Health Amendment Bylaws, 2017), which came into force with immediate effect.

According to new bylaws, a defaulter will be charged for the removal and disposal of waste at the rates decided by the MC. In case of non-payment of charges, the same will be added to the water bill of the defaulter.

Approved in May this year

At the general House meeting held in may this year, the MC decided to impose recovery charges of Rs 5,000 for residential and ₹10,000 for commercial establishments on those littering garbage in the city.

MC joint commissioner Manoj Khatri said Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 will not be considered as a fine but will be termed as “recovery charges” as this amount will be utilised for employing additional labour and machinery to clear the garbage.

Mayor Asha Kumari Jaswal said: We will not tolerate littering on streets. Sanitation byelaws state that it is the responsibility of residents to ensure that their garbage is disposed of properly. Even if a resident has employed somebody else to dump garbage or debris, it is his/her duty to ensure that it is disposed of properly.
