Chandigarh, August 2
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab Kisan Wing state president and MLA Kultar Singh Sandhwan blaming the ruling Congress directly for the heavy damages to the houses and livestock caused by heavy rains and breaking of seasonal rivulets and canals in several districts of the state; has demanded 100 per cent compensation for the losses.
In a statement issued by the party on Monday, Kultar Singh Sandhwan said despite the below normal rainfall so far, the rain had caused damage only due to the incompetence of the government. He said the Congress and the SAD-BJP government had never understood their responsibility to stop the devastation wrought by Ghaggar every year in the areas of SAS Nagar Mohali, Patiala, Sangrur and Mansa districts, bordering Haryana; price of which the people and the poor have to pay every year.
Sandhwan said if the intentions of the governments were clear and pro-people, this Ghaggar would have been a boon for the entire region; but the corrupt system and the Ghaggar has today destroyed thousands of acres of crops as well as homes and livestock of the poor and common people, causing heavy losses. He demanded the entire damage caused by the floods in Malwa and other parts of the state should be immediately cordoned off and the affected farmers, laborers and other victims should be immediately compensated for 100 percent of the losses.
The AAP leader said that even if the Drain and Irrigation departments were free from corruption, the disaster would not have caused so much damage. Sandhwan alleged that before the monsoon, all rain gullies and drains were cleaned only on paper.
