Chandigarh, November 16, 2017: The all-party meeting of Punjab MPs convened by the Amarinder government here on Wednesday was a complete flop. The meeting of all Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members from Punjab was aimed at working out consensus on raising various state related issues in the Parliament.

Attended by only four MPs including Sunilar, Gurjit Aujla, Chaudhary Santokh Singh and Dr Dharamvir Gandhi, the meeting was presided over by Punjab Parliamentary Affairs Minister Braham Mohindra. There are total 20 MPs representing Punjab in both houses.

Not to speak of the Opposition SAD and AAP MPs-those from the ruling Congress including Ravneet Bittu, Ambika Soni and Shamsher Singh Dullo also skipped the meeting. Rajya Sabha member of Congress Partap Singh Bajwa had already made his decision known saying that he would attend only if Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh presided over.

Without naming any MP, Braham Mohindra alleged that those who failed to attend the meeting because the CM did not preside over it showed their narrow-mindedness. Doing so, they also proved that they were not serious about the issues of the state, he added. They proved

Dr Gandhi attributed the non-attendance of MPs to inner and inter-party politics. He emphasised the state government should try again to have the MPs conclave.

The issues of farmers’ debt, more rail links for the state, tax exemptions on the pattern of neighbouring states and border area development were on the meeting’s agenda.
