Former Akali councillor, aides booked for murder attempt

Ludhiana, February 26: The city police today slapped the attempt-to-murder charge on former Akali Dal councillor Bhupinder Singh Bhinda and 70 of his supporters for allegedly attacking Congress workers and resorting to firing at BRS Nagar during the MC polling yesterday.

A case under Sections 307, 323, 120B IPC and 25\/27-54-59 of the Arms Act has been registered.The complainant in the case is Congress worker Naginder Singh of Sarabha Nagar. Besides Bhinda, those booked included Harpreet Singh, Harbhagat Singh, Harjinder Singh, Davinder Singh Gill, Neetu Bajaj, Sharandeep Singh, Samir, Arjinder Singh, brother of Bhinda, Sonu, Ramesh Mago, Bhandari and 60 unknown persons.

Naginder, who was injured in the attack, alleged that when he along with party candidate’s husband Rampal was coming out of the ward, Akali workers led by Bhinda attacked them and even opened fire.

Congress MP Ravneet Bittu, MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu had also reached the spot later. Bhinda, however, alleged that the Congress workers had attacked them and six of his workers were also injured. Jaspal Singh, ASI, said one of the accused nominated in the case, Sharandeep Singh, had been arrested and further probe was on.

The Ward No. 75 falls in the constituency of MLA Ashu. Amrit Varsha Rampal is the ruling party candidate, while Sukhminder Kaur, Bhinda’s wife, is in the fray from the SAD. There was a fierce contest between them as no other candidate had filed nomination papers from this ward.
