GNDU, Punjabi University get new vice-chancellors

Patiala, Aug 15: Acting on the recommendation of the Punjab government, Punjab governor VP Singh Badnore has appointed Jaspal S Sandhu as vice-chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar, while professor BS Ghuman has been appointed as VC of Punjabi University, Patiala.
It is for the first time, the selection has been done after inviting applications. Earlier, the chief minister would handpick his men and appoint them as VCs. A total of 219 applications were received, out of which 31 were interviewed by the screening-cum-selection committee.

BS Ghuman is a noted educationist with 35 years of teaching experience. Presently, he is dean, faculty of arts and founder coordinator of Research Promotion Cell, Canadian Studies Centre, Centre for Emerging Areas in Social Sciences, Panjab University. He has more than 100 research papers and publications.
Sandhu has 25 years of teaching and 18 years of administrative experience. He has also served as acting director NAAC. He is also a member of all important institutions in higher education committee in capacity of secretary, UGC. Sandhu has remained chairman, Steering Committee of the Supreme Court for monitoring inspection of Universities, apart from being member of another three dozen national and international bodies. He has represented India abroad as representative of ministry of higher education. He has more than 300 research papers and publications
Talking to HT, Dr Jaspal S Sandhu Said that “It will be privilege for me to serve the same university, where I studied, worked as teacher and administrator. I will use my experience as UGC secretary and international exposure, to enable the university to compete with world institutions”.
