Govt to develop three Mughal serais as wedding destinations

Patiala, June 15: The Punjab Government has decided to develop three Mughal-era serais Shambhu Serai, Serai Doraha and Serai Lashkari Khan as venues for holding grand marriage functions.

Starting his four-day statewide tour to take stock of the potentialities regarding the tourism sector, Cultural Affairs and Tourism Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu said the tourism sector in Punjab had ample scope for development as well as transformation.

Navjot Sidhu along with Ghanaur legislator Madan Lal Jalalpur took a round of Shambhu Serai and announced that the government would spend Rs 15 to 20 crore on the ancient serai that was spread in 11 acres and about Rs 60 crore in total would be spend on the development of all three serais.

Divulging more, he said the state government had decided to restore the pristine and glorious look of the 32 tourism spots with private collaboration by spending Rs 590 crore.

Sidhu said rather than going to Rajasthan for grand weddings, Punjabis, known all over the globe for organising big fat weddings, would be spoilt for choice for wedding venue in the state itself.

Tourism Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday said under the leadership of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, Punjab would be transformed as a tourism hub and a wedding destination within six months.

He was talking to mediapersons at Aam Khas Bagh in Sirhind on Friday. He, along with officials of the department and the owner of a private firm, Night Frank which has been assigned the job of revamping these heritage buildings visited the Aam Khas Bagh to assess the ongoing work.
