Jalandhar, June 27: The state government is coming up with a plan to bail out drug addicts who offer to get themselves rehabilitated in de-addiction centres. Health Minister Brahm Mohindra said on Tuesday that cases registered against addicts – who were caught with small quantities of drugs — could be withdrawn if they managed to kick the habit after year-long treatment.
The minister made the statement during a state-level function to mark International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Lovely Professional University, near here. He also inaugurated a women de-addiction centre in Kapurthala.
Mohindra stated that under Sections 64(a) and 39 of the NDPS Act, immunity from prosecution would be given to addicts volunteering for treatment.
“We will enforce this provision after looking into the legal aspects,” he added.
Mohindra said the government had decided to name de-addiction and rehabilitation centres as Nav Jiwan and Nav Nirman centres, respectively, so as to remove the stigma attached to these centres.
