Govt to provide free high-quality seed to farmers for Rabi season

Chandigarh/Lohian (Jalandhar), August 24: On the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, Additional Chief Secretary Mr Vishavjeet Khanna, accompanied by Secretary Agriculture Mr KS Pannu, today visited the flood hit areas of Jalandhar district.

Extending a major relief to the farmers of the flood affected villages, the Additional Chief Secretary (Development) Mr Vishavjeet Khanna today said that the state government would provide free high quality seed of the wheat crop to the farmers for upcoming Rabi season.

The Additional Chief Secretary, who visited the flood affected villages of the Jalandhar today, said that the basic motive was to extend a helping hand to the farmers in this hour of crisis. He said that the farmers would be provided high yielding varieties of seed as apart from their crops the flood water has also destroyed the seeds of the food growers. Mr Khanna said that the state government was fully sensitive towards the plight of the farmers in the marooned villages and every sort of help would be extended to them.

The Additional Chief Secretary said that farmers would not have to make any requisition for it but the Agriculture department would provide them after their loss was ascertained in special girdawari. He said that necessary directions have been passed on to the agriculture department for ensuring this relief to the farmers. Mr Khanna said that he was personally supervising the entire operation to ensure that food growers do not face any problem.

The Additional Chief Secretary further said that the department has also made requisite attachments for ensuring fodder for the animals. Likewise, he said that every effort would be made to repair the infrastructural loss in the villages due to the flood water. Mr Khanna said that the state government was committed for bailing out the farmers and people in this hour of crisis.

On the occasion, the Secretary Agriculture Mr Kahan Singh Pannu also listed the efforts being made by the state government to provide succour to the flood affected people.
