Chandigarh, June 6: A special task force of Haryana Police on Wednesday nabbed the dreaded inter-state gangster Sampath Nehra — involved in over a dozen cases of murder, extortion, car-jacking and robbery — from Hyderabad.

Nehra, 28, a national-level decathlon player, is one of the most-wanted gangsters and a key player of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

Director general of police (DGP) BS Sandhu confirmed the arrest of Nehra. DIG STF Sateesh Balan said: “Our team was camping in Hyderabad for the past two weeks after gathering specific leads on Sampath. Today, in a special operation, we arrested him and will being him to Haryana”.

Haryana Police has expanded its operation to nab his other key aides. A native of Rajgarh in Rajasthan, Nehra is a son of a retired Chandigarh police assistant sub inspector (ASI) Ram Chander and has studied in DAV College in Sector 10.

He had recently in a Facebook post claimed responsibility for attack on Punjabi singer Parmish Verma in Mohali. Another gangster Dilpreet Dhahan, booked in the case, is on the run.

On June 2017, Sampath freed his key aide and undertrial prisoner Deepak Kumar from the Panchkula civil hospital after beating up on duty police officer and by throwing chilli powder into policeman’s eyes.

Nearly a month later, the duo eliminated a 25-year-old Kotkapura gangster Lavi Deora, who was member of their rival Vicky Gounder gang.

According to the Mohali police, Sampath was also involved in murder of Banur councillor Preeti Walia’s husband Daljit Singh Walia in 2017. The local businessman was killed while he was out walking out for evening walk. After the attack gangsters also took away a car at gun point in Dera Bassi.

Nehra was first arrested along with the aides in a carjacking case on January 21, 2016, but was later released on bail. While being lodged in a Patiala jail, Nehra came in contact with Lawrence Bishnoi.

On April 14, Chandigarh police had booked Nehra for demanding ransom of more than Rs 1 crore from owners of Kumar Brothers, a chemist shop.
