Jalandhar, November 6: Heavy police force was on Monday deployed in Lovely Professional University (LPU) as students went on a rampage late Sunday evening after the police arrested a hosteller from Jalandhar Cantonment railway station in an alleged extortion case.

The students started protesting as a police team reached the campus near Phagwara to recover a mobile phone from the hosteller’s room, which he had allegedly used in the crime.

The protesters damaged property on the campus and around midnight staged a dharna on National Highway-1 in front of the university gate. Rajinder Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar Commissionerate, confirmed the incident and said talks were on with the students.
Police vehicles were also set on fire.

Four LPU boys were injured and they were admitted to a private hospital in Jalandhar.
The boys were injured when a speeding vehicle came from the wrong side and passed over from the side where students were protesting.

After the Jalandhar Police had gone to recover a stolen mobile phone and arrested a student on the complaint of a Tamil boy lodged in Jalandhar, the protesting students turned violent and later blocked NH 1, outside their campus.
It was here that the vehicle ran over them. The driver of the vehicle, booked under the Section 307 of the IPC, was arrested.

Meanwhile, the Phagwara Police alleged a Jalandhar policeman, hailing from Tamil Nadu, who allegedly acted on a complaint of a student from her parent state, took a hasty step and did not keep them in loop, over a trivial issue of missing mobile phone.

The LPU authorities said that they would release a statement around 3 pm on the issue.
