The notification will be issued on January 3. The last date for filing nominations is January 10. Scrutiny will take place the following day and the last date for withdrawals is January 14.

Midha (76), who won from Jind twice — in 2009 and 2014 —  died of a cardiac arrest on August 26, 2018.

A byelection is to be held within six months of the seat falling vacant. During his parole in October, INLD patriarch Om Prakash Chautala campaigned vigorously in Jind villages along with Midha’s son Krishan Midha, laying the foundation stone of a charitable hospital in Jind town. However, owing to the split in the INLD later, Krishan Midha quit the party and joined the BJP. Subsequently, at a rally on October 21, Chief Minister ML Khattar announced a slew of development projects worth hundreds of crores for Jind.

Dushyant Chautala too chose to launch his Jannayak Janata Party at a rally in Jind. He obviously had the impending byelection in mind. Convicted in the JBT recruitment scam, Dushya-nt’s father Ajay Chautala came out on 14-day furlough from  Tihar Jail on Monday. He is expected to campaign for his son’s fledgling party. The Congress is yet to get going.
