Chandigarh, March 11: Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh has turned 79 today.
Born on March 11, 1942 to Maharaja Yadvinder Singh and Maharani Mohinder Kaur, Capt. Amarinder is serving as Chief Minister of Punjab for the second term.
Capt. Amarinder Singh has served in Army from June 1963 to December 1966 after graduating from National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy. He also participated in 1965 Indo-Pak war.

His friend from school, Rajiv Gandhi inducted him into Congress. He was elected to Lok Sabha in 1980. He resigned from Congress in 1984 in protest against Operation Blue Star.
He joined Shiromani Akali Dal and was elected MLA from Talwandi Sabo and became Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Panchayat and Rural Development.
In 1992, he broke from SAD and formed his own party SAD (Panthic) and later merged it with Congress in 1998. He later became President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and was elected as Punjab Chief Minister in 2002.
He again won in 2017 and became Chief Minister for second time.
