Amritsar, February 27: Upset over the poor maintenance of his dream project, SAD chief Sukhbir Badal today volunteered to remove garbage from the heritage street. He asked Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu to pay attention to the cleanliness and conservation of the street, on which public money worth over Rs 300 crore was spent.
Sukhbir was in the city to take part in a “bhog” at Golden Temple. When he was apprised of the matter, he went for a reality check. He surprised everyone by volunteering to pick garbage.
Sukhbir said: “Sidhu is deliberately neglecting this area. It’s a community project and Sidhu is hurting their sentiments. But he cannot run away from his duties,” he said.
Sukhbir said there were stray dogs wandering in large numbers, creating nuisance for tourists.
He claimed: “I was told that Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s visit to Jallianwala Bagh was cancelled after his security team noticed a large number of stray dogs in the area.
”The cleanliness of the heritage street is looked after by the MC, which has hired a private firm. Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu admitted that there were problems in tackling the stray dog menace, but calimed that the cleanliness was undertaken regularly as per schedule.
Rintu said during Trudeau’s visit, the dogs were detained in a room. “The cleanliness issue is unreasonably blown up. I and Sidhu monitor the situation on a regular basis. But visitors keep littering the place,” he said.
