The deceased was identified as Poonam Kumari, hailing from Ugrahan village of Darbanga district. She and her parents were living here in the Akalsar road locality. The girl’s father, Ashok Mukhia, and mother Rinku Devi had left for their home state two days ago to visit family members. She was left behind in the house of Jinesh Garg, a leading arhtiya (commission agent) and pesticide/fertiliser dealer of Dharamkot subdivision.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the girl had been working in Garg’s house for the past more than two years. She was employed at the age of 11 in violation of child labour laws.

Till the filing of this report, the police had not yet registered a case. The post-mortem examination had also not been conducted so far.

Jatinder Singh, SHO, said the body had been kept in the mortuary of the district hospital, adding that the police were waiting for the parents to return.

“We will first record the parents’ statements and then ask medical officials to conduct a post-mortem and medical examination of the body,” said a senior officer of the local police.
