Mini libraries in co-op societies to connect farmers & village folk with literature

Chandigarh, November 29: A book titled ‘Eh jo Shamsher Sandhu’ chronicling the life of noted journalist, lyricist and literary personality Mr. Shamsher Sandhu was released today in an impressive function in which the Cooperation and Jails Minister S. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa was the Chief Guest.

He was accompanied by Editor of the book Kanwaljit, Principal Sarwan Singh, Writer Ninder Ghugianvi and Dilsher Singh Chandel.

In his address on the occasion, S. Randhawa said that a literary movement needs to be created for the development of Punjab. He advocated the sprucing up of the libraries at Panchayat Bhawan and Schools to inculcate reading habits amongst the people especially children. He also termed reading of books as a must for the political people.

He announced that during the cooperation week, a whole day would be devoted to the literary activities like seminars, and poetry recitation. He also added that mini libraries would be set up at 3000 cooperative societies by providing books to them.

Sharing a personal moment, the minister said that after the demise of his mother, his sisters got emotional one day while listening to the song ‘Peke Hunde Mawan Naal’ penned by Shamsher Sandhu.

While presiding over the function, Principal Sarwan Singh termed Shamsher Sandhu as the Dara Singh of song writing. He also said that although Shamsher Sandhu is a popular lyricist, owing to stories flowing out of his pen in the early phase of his life, he perfectly well qualifies as a frontline story writer. He advocated the need for starting book culture in Punjab and getting the younger generation hooked on to the books.

Shamsher Sandhu on the occasion recited the choicest of couplets by famous poets besides those of his student days and initial lines of his popular songs.

Ably managing the stage, Noted litterateur Ninder Ghugianvi divulged that the book is a great collection of the essays written by the eminent people associated with Shamsher Sandhu, who hail from literary, movie, journalistic and musical background.

Among other dignitaries present on the occasion included Editor of the book Kanwaljit, Patron of Adbi Satth Rose Garden Dilsher Singh Chandel, Navdeep Singh Gill and Malkit Singh Aujla who shared their views on different facets of Shamsher Sandhu’s personality.
