Toronto, Ontario: Starting on Jan. 4, all students in the Peel District School Board will switch to remote learning for a set period of time.
This announcement came after the Ontario government announced a provincewide lockdown for 28 days in southern Ontario, starting on Dec. 26.
Premier Doug Ford said that the measure was necessary due to the soaring rates of COVID-19 across the province.
“School buildings will be closed to students during this time, except for some students who are learning in-person in contained special education classes,” wrote the Peel District School Board in a release, adding that more information will be released about special education classes.
Currently, elementary students are expected to return to school on Jan. 11, and secondary students are slated to be back in classrooms by Jan. 25.
The school board will be notifying parents if that changes.
