Chandigarh, October 25: The five suspects picked up by the Mohali police in gruesome double murder case of senior Journalist KJ Singh and his mother have admitted before officers that they were present outside the victim’s house in 3B2. However, they have maintained that they were in the area to look for paying guest accommodation.
The suspects, all below 25, are Arshdeep Singh and Satnam Gill, from Raikot in Ludhiana. They claim to be preparing for the IELTS exam Mohali. The other three — Baljinder Singh, Gurjinder Singh and Arpit hail from Sangrur and claim to be studying in Mohali colleges. Police sources say they are not convinced about their explanation as the five could not present convincing evidence of what they were studying.
On Tuesday, HT had broken the story of Mohali police picking the suspects from Bathinda area.
After the police released photographs of the suspects, police received several leads. Then, the dump of around 600 mobile numbers helped the police track the address of the accused. Even then, raids at their houses proved futile. Finally, informers or mediators helped police zero in on the five suspects.
KJ Singh, 63, and Gurcharan Kaur, 92, were found murdered at their house on the afternoon of September 23. The postmortem confirmed that they were killed around 9pm the previous night. While KJ had suffered multiple stab wounds in his neck, stomach and chest, his mother had been strangulated.
Punjab IG crime Shashi Prabha, who also heads the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to inquire into the case, said, “We will be calling them repeatedly for questioning and have made them part of our investigation.”
Parents of the men visited IG Patiala Range AS Rai to know the whereabouts of their wards. “Some guardians approached me. I told them to touch with Mohali Police,” Rai said.
Officers probing the case maintain that no arrests had been made and the men had been called for questioning. A section of the force is disappointed that the lead had not yielded much. They had hoped that the CCTV grabs were the vital clues that could have led to cracking of the case.
