New Delhi, June 5: The Centre has rushed about 1,000 paramilitary jawans to Meghalaya to help the state government tackle the situation in Shillong, even as three CRPF personnel were injured when protesters pelted their Mawlai camp with stones on Sunday night.

Shillong has been witnessing violent clashes between residents of the city’s Punjabi Lane area and Khasi drivers of state-run buses.

Fresh bouts of violence broke out on Sunday night even as curfew was relaxed for eight hours earlier in the day. The police used tear gas shells to disperse the mob.

Normal life remained affected for the fourth day in a row with curfew imposed in parts of the city under the Lumdiengjri police station and Cantonment Beat House areas since 4 am. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma chaired an all-party meeting and a four-member team sent by Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh also met him.

Many local pressure groups have demanded that the residents of Punjabi Lane be shifted permanently from the present prime location at Motphran.
