Anandpur Sahib, October 29: Even as Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, facing rebellion from the senior party leadership, has offered to step down in case the party demanded so, senior party leader and SAD spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema ruled out any such move.
Interacting with mediapersons here today, Cheema said, “Sukhbir is the backbone of the SAD, hence there is no question of seeking his resignation.”
Sukhbir is facing rebellion from senior SAD leaders, including Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, former MP Ratan Singh Ajnala and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa.
Cheema said, “The SAD’s progress under the leadership of Sukhbir is unprecedented. It was because of him that the Akalis won two consecutive Assembly elections, along with winning the elections to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC).”
The party would be run by Sukbir in future also, said the former state Education Minister.
Recently, senior Akali leaders Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Ranjit Singh Brahmpura resigned from party positions.
These developments against the backdrop of the release of Justice Ranjit Singh (retd) Commission report, indicting the then SAD-BJP coalition government for sacrilege cases in the state, stoked the fear of revolt in the party.
