Chandigarh, February 27: Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today approved the setting up of a statutory State Vigilance Commission. To be set up along the lines of the Central Vigilance Commission, the state body would be headed by a retired High Court judge and have commissioners of a panel of three persons, including a senior IAS officer who has held the post of chief secretary or additional chief secretary of a state government; and a senior IPS officer who have held the post of DGP or ADGP.

Sources in the Chief Ministers Office (CMO) said after getting in-principal approval from the CM, the exercise to work out the modalities were being done. A legislation to set up the commission was expected to be tabled in the Budget session.

During the previous Congress regime (2002-07), it had approved the Punjab State Vigilance Commission Act, 2006, The Akali government had abolished the commission in March 2007.

It had maintained that the commission had established supremacy over the VB. “The government intends to establish an independent body to exercise control over the VB and police in respect of investigation of offences under the Corruption Act more effectively,” said an officer.
