Now, a three-member selection-cum-search committee will interview the candidates before sending the names of the shortlisted ones to the Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, who is the varsity’s chancellor.

Some of the prominent names from PU who have applied for the post include former deans university instruction (DUI) Meenakshi Malhotra and AK Bhandari, microbial biotechnology department professor Rupinder Tewari, and chemistry department professor SK Mehta.

Apart from these, the vice-chancellor of Guru Jambeshwar University of Science and Technology, Hisar, Tankeshwar Kumar, and former vice-chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), ADN Bajpai have also applied for the post.

The search committee can look for a candidate apart from these applicants and suggest a name to the university chancellor.

Established in independent India in 1947 with roots in the Lahore varsity, this is the first time that PU has advertised the post of the V-C and invited applications.

The tenure of the current V-C, Prof Arun Kumar Grover, will end on July 22 this year. He had ruled the possibility of applying for the post again, saying that he had already completed two terms as the V-C. He had joined PU as the V-C on July 23, 2012, and got an extension in 2015 just before he was set to retire.

The V-C’s post carries a basic pay of ₹75,000 per month along with ₹5,000 as special allowance and dearness allowance as applicable under the sixth pay commission. A rent-free, semi-furnished accommodation on the campus is also provided.
