Amritsar, March 8: Workers of the state unit of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) were forced to leave a spot along the heritage street today where they were holding a relay fast against GST on langar purchases of the Golden Temple.
A few hours before, Congress MP Gurjit Singh Aujla expressed solidarity with the protesters. He demanded Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal to resign if she was unable to convince the Centre to waive GST on langar purchase.
A group of Trinamool Congress leaders led by state convener Manjit Singh were observing a relay fast for the past three days. They had started a signature campaign too that was meant to be submitted to the Union Finance Minister. They claimed that over 5,000 signatures were procured from the devotees.
Manjit Singh said as Aujla left the venue, Deputy Commissioner Kamaldeep Singh Sangha came and ordered them to disperse as the site was not meant to hold protests.
“When we refused, the police forcefully removed us and detained us at the Kotwali police station under Sections 107 and 151 of the CrPC. Later, we were produced before the DCP and discharged. They want to scuttle our voice against the government’s “indifferent” attitude towards Sikhs. We will decide the next course of action at our meeting,” he said.
“When we apprised Aujla about the police action on phone, he just ignored it,” he added.
