Faridkot, February 1: State DGP Suresh Arora said here today that police officials needed to be emotionally strong to deal with stress and provocation. He was here to attend the cremation of constable Lal Singh.
The latter was standing beside DSP Baljinder Singh Sandhu when a bullet had pierced the DSP’s head and then hit him during a students’ protest on January 29.The DGP said it was the first such incident he had come across in his career.
“It’s shocking. I will ask the DGP (training) to give special training to police officials, making them psychologically stronger to cope with the increased stress and handle provocation and resentment during protests,” he said.
“We need to check the stress levels of the police force. We had introduced certain measures in the past, but a deeper study is required,” he added.
Arora also met two injured officials of the Counter-Intelligence Wing, Sub-Inspector Balwinder Singh and ASI Kirpal Singh, at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital here. They had sustained bullet injuries during the encounter with gangsters Vicky Gounder and Prema Lahoria on January 26.
On Gounder’s alleged links with Congress leader Avtar Henry, the DGP said the latter had submitted his explanation to the police and it was being examined.
