Jalandhar, July 13: Power tariff is set to go down by 10 paise per unit as the octroi, imposed by the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), has been withdrawn under the goods and Service Tax (GST) regime, implemented across the country on July 1.

Earlier, the electricity bill included 10 paise per unit octroi, which has now been dissolved under GST, said chairman-cum-managing director (CMD) A Venu Prasad on phone.

Power tariff

Before the implementation of the GST, if a household consumed 500 units of power, it had to pay Rs 50 as octroi, which will now be exempted.

The electricity bill that the consumer gets from PSPCL at present includes octroi of 10 paise per unit, electricity duty (ED) of 13% of the sale of power (SOP), cow cess 1 paise per unit and infrastructure development cess of 5% of SOP.

Officials in the PSPCL (north zone) said that so far they have only received the notification of exempting octroi while directions on cow cess and infrastructure development cess are yet to be notified.

While power is currently available at Rs 5 per unit to industrial units, the power tariff for other sections of consumers varies from Rs 5 to Rs 6.5 per unit.
