Phagwara, January 4: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lovely Professional University (LPU), around 35 Congress workers protested in front of the campus on the Rafale deal and other issues on Thursday.

The Congress workers wore jackets with various slogans written on them.

Led by Punjab Pradesh Congress vice-president Himanshu Pathak, the workers began the protest at 11.30 am. However, they were soon rounded up by the police.

A few of the leaders were taken by the Kapurthala police in vehicles to the Paragpur police station. They were kept there for several hours, later they were shifted to the Jandiala police station. They were let off at 2.30 pm.

Speaking to The Tribune, Himanshu Pathak said, “Our demand is that the Prime Minister should answer the allegations being made against him in the Rafale deal. We also want the Prime Minister to fulfil the BJP’s poll promise and deposit Rs 15 lakh into citizens accounts.”

He said, “The police also kept our mobile phones at the Paragpur police station which were returned to us only in the afternoon.”

Among those detained were Sanju Arora, Lovely Sohal, Devinder Ghai and Ajay Puri.

Later in the day, Congress’ Jalandhar West MLA Sushil Rinku and his supporters were also rounded up from outside the LPU. Initially, he was taken to the Rawalpindi police station from where he returned within 15 minutes and restarted the protest. Rinku and his supporters were again picked up and dropped at Rama Mandi.
