Chandigarh, January 17: At least 80 per cent of the teachers of Class X and XII in the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) do not participate in the evaluation of papers during the annual examination.
Involving 70,000 teachers, against the participating strength of only about 15,000, will be the biggest challenge for the PSEB as it plans to declare the results within 15 days after exams.
Confirming the figures, PSEB secretary Hargunjit Kaur said: “The number of teachers participating in the evaluation process was indeed very less. We are preparing a mobile app for getting all teachers on a common platform to make them an integral part of the examination process — conduct, evaluation and compilation of results. The first orientation workshop is scheduled shortly.”
Following instructions from Secretary (School Education) Krishan Kumar, the board this time has added more than 200 centres for evaluation to the existing strength of about 400. This has been done to ensure greater teacher participation in the result compilation activity involving more than 8.5 lakh regular students of Class X and XII, besides those studying in the Open School.
Hargunjit Kaur said: “To check the casual approach of many evaluators, we have put a cap on the maximum limit by allowing checking of a maximum 25 copies by a single teacher per day. One teacher can evaluate a maximum of 75 copies in all, except under special circumstances when he is given another lot of three more packets of 25 each.”
Principal of a senior secondary school in Bathinda district said: “A large number of those involved in the evaluation currently manage their duties through their contacts in the headquarters. There is a large section which thinks a remuneration of just Rs 6 per copy is too less to waste their vacations.”
The PSEB secretary said: “We have also decided to allow a re-evaluation facility for students who think their papers have not been evaluated fairly. More importantly, in case the difference of marks between the revised and the original copy is more than 10 per cent, the teacher will have to give a written explanation which will be made a part of his career record.”
