Chandigarh, June 19
Governor Punjab and Administrator UT Chandigarh, Sh.V.P. Singh Badnore condoled the sad demise of legendary athlete Milkha Singh, who succumbed to Covid complications here late last night at PGIMER just a few days after the passing away of his wife, Nirmal Milkha Singh.
Sh. Milkha Singh was cremated with full state honour this evening at sector 25 Crematorium Ground here. Governor Punjab, Sh. V.P.Singh Badnore attended the cremation alongwith Sh.Kiren Rijjiju, Union Minister of State for Sports and placed the Wreath, as a mark of respect to the departed soul.
Earlier, in his condolence message, the Governor said, he was extremely grieved to learn about the death of India’s iconic sprinter, flying Sikh, Milkha Singh who won several gold medals for India in various national and international events.
Padma Shree, Milkha Singh has left an indelible mark in achieving the World wide recognition in the field of Sports. He will always remain an inspiration to the younger generations. The void created by his sad demise is difficult to be filled.
He shared his heartfelt condolences with his family, relatives, friends and admirers, prayed to the Almighty to give strength to them to get over this extremely emotional phase and grant eternal peace to the departed soul.
Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal, Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh, Gurpreet Singh GP and Kaka Randeep Nabha (Both MlLAs) were present to pay the last respect to greatest star.
Meanwhile contingent of 13th Battalion under the command of Commandant Jatinder Singh Khaira & DSP Sham Sunder, contingent of CRPF & Chandigarh Police under the command of Inspector Daya Ram fired two volley shots as a mark of respect to the departed soul. Milkha Singh’s body was earlier brought from the PGIMER hospital to his residence from where it was taken to the crematorium in a bedecked vehicle.
During the last rituals senior civil and police officials including Director Public Relation Punjab Anindita Mitra, DC Chandigarh Mandip Singh Brar and SSP Chandigarh Kuldeep Singh Chahal were also present.
