CHANDIGARH August 5: Punjab will soon set up a new body ‘directorate of groundwater management’ under the irrigation wing of the department of irrigation and power, for conservation, utilization and management of the depleting groundwater resources in the state.
The existing water resources administration of the irrigation department will be subsumed into the new directorate. Due to limited allocation to the state in the river waters, about 73% of irrigation requirements are met by groundwater, which is depleting rapidly.
