Sangrur, July 10: Alleging that the recent rain has destroyed paddy sown on hundreds of acres, farmers under the banner of the BKU Ugrahan on Monday protested in front of the DC office.
They announced to intensify their agitation if the government failed to take immediate steps to clean drains and to give them adequate compensation.
The protesting farmers alleged that despite repeated requests, the Sangrur administration did not take steps to clean the drains. It led to overflowing of rainwater from drains, which inundated hundreds of acres of paddy fields.
“The government must compensate the farmers who have suffered losses. Farmers are already under huge debt, while more losses would multiply their problems,” said Amrik Singh Gandua, district president, BKU Ugrahan.
Sangrur DC Ghanshayam Thori said they did not get required funds for cleaning drains, but promised to look help the farmers in the matter.
