Amritsar, March 12: A 10-foot-tall statue of Shaheed Udham Singh will be installed at the Jallianwala Bagh on March 13, the day on which he gunned down Michael O’Dwyer in London in 1940 to avenge the infamous massacre.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will unveil the statue. The Central government has already announced a slew of programmes to commemorate the centenary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre next year.

A statue of the martyr in a charging position while holding a pistol is installed outside the Hall Gate in the city but a long-pending demand to install another one at the iconic bagh will be fulfilled now.

Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation president Sukhchain Singh Lyallpuri said they had been struggling to install the statue of the martyr at the bagh for the past nearly 15 years. “Udham Singh had sacrificed his life to avenge the massacre of Indians at the Jallianwala Bagh. He had made this categorically clear in the court before he was awarded capital punishment and hanged in England in 1940,” Lyallpuri said.
