Recovery notices: Agitated farmers lock bank

Date:

Ferozepur, May 19: Hundreds of farmers belonging to various outfits, including the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Krantikari) and Bhartiya Kisan Union Ekta (Dakonda) held a protest in front of Punjab Agriculture Development Bank (PADB) here on Friday.

The protesters also locked the gates of the bank. The farmers were protesting against the notices for recovery of dues being sent by the bank officials.

Farmer union leaders Baldev Singh and Harnek Singh Mehma said the matter pertaining to the recovery of loans from farmers was sub judice in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, hence till the outcome of the case no bank official could serve notices to farmers for bank loan recovery.

Ved Parkash, manager, Punjab Agriculture Development Bank, said the staff members and regular customers had to bear the brunt of the protest, which was unwarranted.

“We were detained for several hours due to which our work suffered. I will write to the administration about the incident and ask them to take action in the matter,” said the Manager.
