The work on the centre had come to a standstill in January due to the paucity of funds. Official sources said about 36 per cent of the work had been completed at the cost of Rs 4 crore provided by the Punjab Health System Corporation. The Bathinda-based private company had stopped work as the government was reportedly yet to pay Rs 2 crore for the work done by the company. The foundation stone of the Tertiary Cancer Care Centre was laid by then Health Minister Surjit Kumar Jyani on December 23, 2016.

Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal had announced a grant of Rs 45 crore for the centre in both budgets presented by the present government.
