Rural polls: Cong wins 25% seats unopposed in Majha

Amritsar, September 17: The Congress has grabbed 25 per cent seats in the Majha zone unopposed ahead of the zila parishad and block samiti elections, scheduled to be held on September 19.

In Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Pathankot, of 80 zones of zila parishad, candidates in 23 zones were declared winner unopposed. Similarly, in 723 zones of block samitis, 177 zones were won without election. Almost all seats were grabbed by Congress candidates.

Main issues, including civic amenities, health, education and agrarian crisis, took a back seat, whereas Panthic issues are on the top of the parties’ agenda.

The Congress leaders have been highlighting the Justice Ranjit Singh (retd) Commission report during campaigning.

The MLAs and former legislators from the ruling and opposition parties have started participating in political gatherings in villages in support of their candidates.

In Gurdaspur, which has 25 zila parishad zones, elections will be held on 12. Congress candidates have been elected unopposed on the rest. Of 217 zones of block samitis, the Congress bagged 143.

In Tarn Taran, Congress candidates are set to be elected on nine of 20 zones. In block samitis, 85 zones are in their kitty of a total of 160. Two zones were won unopposed by SAD candidates. Amritsar district has 25 zila parishad zones and 199 block samiti zones.

Congress candidate from Bohoewali village in Ajnala Sarabjit Kaur has won the zila parishad seat. In block samitis, 45 candidates won unopposed. Seven have won unopposed in Ajnala zone, five each in Harsha Chinna and Chogawan, eight in Attari, four each in Verka and Jandiala Guru, two in Tarsikka and nine in Rayya zone. In Pathankot, elections will be held on 10 zones. In 91 zones of block samitis, only three candidates won unopposed.
