Chandigarh, July 11: Lok Insaaf Party MLA Simarjit Singh Bains on Monday alleged a scam in the purchase of medicines.
At a press conference, Bains alleged that the Health Department was making tailor-made conditions to give benefit to particular companies in purchase of medicines for supply in government hospitals. He claimed that conditions such as WHO certification and turnover of Rs 50 crore had been introduced to benefit some multinationals.
While demanding an inquiry, Bains blamed Health Minister Brahm Mohindra for this. He alleged that Mohindra has an association with one of the companies. He alleged that the companies to which the department wanted to give benefits to were selling medicines at exorbitant prices and the same medicines were available at much cheaper prices.
Mohindra said the allegations were baseless and that the tendering process was underway. He said it had been alleged that he was the owner of one of the companies, adding, “I think Bains has forgotten that acting on a CAG report, I had ordered an inquiry against the same company within the first fortnight of taking over as the Health Minister.”
