SGPC to felicitate villages under drive against caste divide

Amritsar, March 10: To discourage gurdwaras for different castes across Punjab, the SGPC has initiated a move to honour the panchayats or committees of villages which have one gurdwara for all in their locality.

Under the scheme “Ik Nagar Ik Gurdwara”, the SGPC has announced to launch this drive tomorrow from Chakar village in Jagraon district.

This decision was taken during an executive body meeting held at Fatehgarh Sahib recently.

SGPC’s additional secretary Diljit Singh Bedi said the campaign is being started from a historic gurdwara located in Chakar village in which local gurdwara committee members would be honoured. “The aim is to get the Sikh community free from any caste-based discrimination. This village has a population of around 15,000 but there is only one gurdwara,” he said.

He said a special programme would be conducted which would be attended by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh and SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal.

Earlier, the Akal Takht had also asked the community to desist from raising caste-based gurdwaras in their areas, but there has been no let-up in the practice in various villages.
