Jalandhar, January 2: Jaiveer Shergill, a Jalandhar-based lawyer, has been appointed in the Congress media team which was handpicked by party president Rahul Gandhi and is also tipped to get the Lok Sabha ticket from Anandpur Sahib.

He is the lone representative from Punjab in the 10 member ‘Media warriors’ team’ which has been reportedly setup to counter the BJP’s propaganda against the ‘Grand Old Party’ ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The 35-year-old has the distinction of being the youngest face amongst the AICC’s newly-appointed team of 10 national spokespersons.

Earlier, he was a media panellist of the party.

Shergill, a second generation practising advocate of the Supreme Court of India, is also in contention to be the Congress party’s Lok Sabha candidate from Anandpur Sahib.

Former Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni had contested from there last time.

The other members of new set of 10 young national spokespersons include, Dr Syed Naseer Hussain, a Rajya Sabha MP from Karnataka, Pawan Khera, a former OSD to former Delhi CM Sheila Dixit, Ragini Nayak, a Congress leader from Delhi who has also been the Delhi University Student Union president, Dr Gourav Vallabh, from Rajasthan, Rajiv Tyagi from UP, Akhilesh Pratap Singh from Amethi, the home constituency of Gandhi family, Sunil Ahire, Hina Kaware, a Congress MLA and Dr Sravan Dasoju.

The Congress has another set of veteran spokespersons which has not been touched so far. They include veterans such as former Union ministers P Chidambaram, Manish Tewari, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Aman Sharma.

“The job of the new team will be to counter the false propaganda of the BJP with facts and figures. The party spokespersons will fan out among people and will make them aware about party’s plans and programmes apart from telling them how the rival party was often resorting to playing with historical facts and also was misleading them on the country’s fiscal position,” said Jaiveer Shergill
