Chandigarh, November 29: Issuing a notice of motion on a petition alleging running of 40 brick-kilns in eight districts of Punjab even after cancellation of licence and revocation of consent, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday directed the authorities concerned to make all efforts to enforce the order of their closure.

The directions by the Bench of Chief Justice Krishna Murari and Justice Arun Palli came on a petition filed in public interest against Punjab and other respondents by the Punjab Brick Kiln Owners Association through counsel RPS Bara.

Appearing before the Bench, senior advocate Gurminder Singh and Bara contended that effective steps had not been initiated in eight districts of the state by the SSPs, the DCs and the pollution control authorities after the issuance of a circular by the Punjab Pollution Control Board, temporarily revoking the consent for their operation and suspension of licences.

Bara added after the temporary revocation of consent and suspension of licences, operations by brick-kilns amounted to the commission of a criminal and non-bailable offence.

He also referred to another circular, which was issued a couple of days back stating that the consent for operation had been temporarily suspended till January 31. Yet, action had not been initiated.
