New Delhi, June 18
As anti-Agnipath protests entered the fourth day, Congress president Sonia Gandhi in a message to the protesting youth said her party stands with them and will work for the withdrawal of the “directionless plan.”
In a statement released through AICC general secretary communication Jairam Ramesh, Sonia, admitted to Ganga Ram Hospital since June 12, appealed to the youth to protest peacefully for what she termed their “rightful demands.”
“The Congress stands with you with all its might and promises to struggle for your interests and for the withdrawal of this scheme. Like true patriots, we will articulate your voices following the path of truth, non-violence, resilience and peace,” Gandhi said in her statement.
The Congress chief said It is unfortunate that the government has announced the new “directionless” armed forces recruitment policy ignoring the concerns of youngsters and defence experts, so also ex-servicemen.
While pledging to oppose the scheme, Gandhi asked the youth not to resort to violence.
“You aspire for the significant task of national service by joining the Indian Army.
I can understand your pain of three-year delay in recruitment despite lakhs of vacancies in the Army. I also empathise with the youth who are awaiting results and appointments after taking the test for induction in the Air Force.
I appeal to you to use peaceful and non-violent means to protest for your rightful demands. The Indian National Congress is with you,” she said.
The Congress has announced a Satyagraha at Jantar Mantar tomorrow in support of the demands of protesters to withdraw the plan.
